Placements: every size and channel in the live preview
The live preview shows a Google display, Performance Max, Demand Gen, or YouTube ad in each place it can run. Tabs above the preview pick the channel, the Desktop view and Mobile view icons pick the device, and each placement card shows its name and size, such as Leaderboard 728×90.
All four are on today's Free plan, as well as on Studio. On an earlier Free plan or during a trial, responsive display and YouTube are included, and Performance Max and Demand Gen need Studio.
How many placements a responsive display ad shows
25 placements. Tabs are All, Display, Gmail, and YouTube. Desktop view has 12: ten display sizes, Gmail Desktop, and YouTube Display Ad. Mobile view has 17: fourteen display sizes, Gmail Mobile, YouTube Display Ad, and YouTube Discovery Ad. A few sizes, such as Medium Rectangle 300×250, show in both views.
What channels does the Performance Max preview cover
Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, and Gmail, with 33 placements plus the search result on the Search tab. Tabs are All, Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, and Gmail. There is no Maps tab. Desktop view has 8 display sizes, 3 YouTube placements, and Gmail Desktop. Mobile view has 10 display sizes, 8 YouTube placements, 3 Discover placements, and Gmail Mobile. The All tab shows everything except Search.
Demand Gen and YouTube placements
Demand Gen has the tabs All, YouTube, Discover, and Gmail. The placements follow the ad type you picked: Single image ad, Video ad, or Carousel image ad.
YouTube shows 4 placements: In-Stream, In-Feed, Shorts, and Bumper, plus All. It opens on the ad's own type, or In-Stream. Bumper uses the first 6 seconds of your video.
A placement is never dropped for a missing image or logo. It shows a placeholder until you add one.
Desktop and mobile
Click the monitor icon for Desktop view or the phone icon for Mobile view. Display, Performance Max, Demand Gen, and YouTube open in Desktop view. Discover is mobile only, so on desktop it says Discover ads are not available on desktop devices. On YouTube, the device icons hide on the All and Shorts tabs. The view you pick is not saved. See Preview on mobile and desktop.
Hide a placement your client will not run
On responsive display, Performance Max, and Demand Gen, you can hide a placement so your client does not review it.
- Make sure the toggle at the top says Editor, not Preview.
- Hover over the placement and click the eye icon in its top-right corner. Its tooltip is Hide this variation.
- The card dims and shows Hidden from preview.
Hidden placements disappear in the Preview view and on client links that open in Preview. When every placement on a tab is hidden, that tab greys out and says, for example, All Display variations are hidden.
To bring one back, switch to Editor and click the eye on the dimmed card, Show this variation. The choice is saved on the preview, for every ad in it and for your teammates. A duplicate of the preview keeps it. Search ads and YouTube ads do not have this.
Check your images and text
The Asset Status panel beside a responsive display, Performance Max, or Demand Gen preview counts what the ad has, such as Headlines, Descriptions, Business Name, Landscape (1.91:1), Square (1:1), and Logos. Click Asset Status to open or close it. A count in amber or red is missing. To make a landscape, square, or portrait version of one image, crop it in the asset library. See Asset library.
Safe zones on Shorts
The Shorts preview shows the video full height with Like, Dislike, and Share over it, the way YouTube does. It does not draw separate safe-zone guides.
