Call-only ads: show a phone number on a search ad

How-to guidesLast verified:

Can I make a call-only ad in PPC Ad Editor? There is no separate call-only ad format. To mock up an ad that leads with a phone number, build a Google Search ad and add a call extension. The live preview then shows your phone number under the ad, and you share it with your client like any other preview.

Add a phone number to a search ad

  1. Open the Google Search ad, then click Assets at the top right to open the asset library.
  2. Open the Call tab and click Add Call Extension.
  3. Pick the Country/Region, type the Phone Number, and keep Enable Call Extension on.
  4. Optional. Tick Call-Only Ads, Show only the phone number (no website link). The extension shows a Call Only tag in the asset library.
  5. Click Add Call Extension. The phone number shows on the live preview, under the headlines and descriptions.

To choose which call extension shows on an ad group, click the phone number on the live preview, or click Set up next to Call extension in Preview settings, the sliders icon above the preview.

Hide the phone number again

Open Preview settings, turn off Call extension, and click Apply. That only hides it in the preview. Nothing is deleted.

What the call-only tick does not do

The preview still shows your headlines, descriptions and display URL. The Call-Only Ads tick marks the call extension in your asset library. It does not turn the preview into a phone-only ad.

Does the phone number come with the export?

Yes. Export to Google Ads Editor includes the call extension's country and phone number, so the call asset comes with your ad when you import it in Google Ads Editor. PPC Ad Editor does not push ads to Google Ads.

I came from the call-only ad page on your website

That page opens sign-up with a Google Search ad picked on the first-ad screen. Build the ad, then add the call extension as above.

Are call extensions on the Free tier?

Google Search ads and call extensions work on the Free tier and on Studio.
