Responsive search ads

ReferenceLast verified:

How many headlines and descriptions can a responsive search ad have in PPC Ad Editor? Up to 15 headlines of 30 characters and up to 4 descriptions of 90 characters, the same as Google Ads. Each field counts as you type. Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters count as two.

What an RSA has in the editor

  • Headlines, up to 15, 30 characters each.
  • Descriptions, up to 4, 90 characters each.
  • Final URL and two display paths.
  • Sitelinks, callouts and structured snippets. An image on the search preview is an image extension from the asset library.
  • A logo and a business name.
  • Keywords, set on the ad group.

The ad form has no image field and no video field.

Pin a headline or description

Each headline and description has a Pin position menu. Pick Only in Position 1, Only in Position 2 or, for a headline, Only in Position 3. Any Unpinned Position puts it back in rotation. The preview keeps a pinned line in its slot and rotates the rest, the way Google does.

A headline pinned to position 3 does not show when Preview settings is on the two-headline layout, Standard (2H). The settings say Pinned position 3 won't show in 2-headline layout.

See the combinations

The live preview mixes your headlines and descriptions the way Google does. Pick One Ad, Three Ads or Five Ads to see several combinations, and click Shuffle for the next set. See See your RSA variations.

Export and what the editor does not do

RSA is one of the formats you can export as a file for Google Ads Editor. Export is on every plan, Free tier included. The editor does not submit the ad to Google Ads, and it does not check Google's ad policies. See Policy basics the editor does not clear.

Google's own spec is at https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/7684791. If it disagrees with the editor, the editor's counter is what a person can type.
