Performance Max
In the editor Performance Max allows 15 short headlines of 30 characters, 5 long headlines of 90, and 5 descriptions of 90. It uses images, logos, a business name, and optional videos. Does Performance Max take a video file or a YouTube link? A YouTube link. You cannot upload a video file to a Performance Max ad. It does not use keywords or sitelinks.
Can I export Performance Max to Google Ads Editor?
Yes, and images too small for the import are fixed for you. Click Export at the top right of the editor and pick Google Ads Editor (CSV). The download is a ZIP with the CSVs plus the images and logos on the ad. The images are sorted into landscape, square, and portrait folders to match the CSV, and an image smaller than Google's minimum for its shape is enlarged in the ZIP so the import accepts it. Logos are not enlarged. The editor does not submit the asset group to Google Ads. Posting it is a step you take in Google Ads Editor.
Google's own spec is at https://support.google.com/google-ads/answer/10724817. Re-read that page when this note is older than 90 days.
Export is on every plan, Free tier included.
Why the preview shows a gradient instead of your images
A Performance Max preview uses the images in the ad's Images section. Each placement takes only an image of its own shape. Where the ad has no image of that shape, the placement shows a blue and purple gradient instead.
- Landscape placements need a 1.91:1 image, square placements a 1:1 image, and portrait placements a 4:5 image. A wide image counts as landscape, a near-square one as square, and a tall one as portrait. Each image on the ad shows its ratio in the corner of its thumbnail.
- One image of the right shape is enough for all the placements of that shape.
- An image in the asset library does not reach the ad on its own. On the ad, click Add Image, pick images from your asset library or upload new ones, then click Done.
- Asset Status, above the preview, counts Landscape (1.91:1), Square (1:1), Portrait (4:5), and Logos. A 0 there means those placements show the gradient. Click Asset Status to open it if it is closed.
Associating an asset in the asset library links it to the account, a campaign, or an ad group. It does not add an image to a Performance Max ad. The ad's Images section does that.
